A Crucial Part of Our Success:
The Beyond U Program, a 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC), provides our students with enriched experiences after school, on the weekends and throughout the summer. New research tells us that learning and preparation for a successful life require enriched experiences that go well beyond text books, classrooms and the school day.
The UCAP School and the Beyond U Program have been partially funded by three consecutive five-year 21st Century Grants, the last of which commenced in the 2017-18 school year. The awarding of this third grant is a testament to the success of Beyond U and the leadership of Beyond U Director Elisa Almonte.
The 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) program provides the guidelines for the Beyond U Program and ensures that in addition to our after school programming for students, families are also offered necessary educational services including literacy instruction and cultural enrichment. As a CCLC Program, Beyond U provides additional support and resources, ensuring that young people are exposed to higher thinking, connected with higher education and career paths.
We offer at least 2 dozen recurring or new 6-week programs to meet the needs and interests of our students. There are programs with activities focused on STEM, cultural enrichment, academics, fitness, as well as the arts, and field trips to work places, colleges and cultural sites.
Beyond U programs improve students’ attendance, study habits, attitudes toward school and school work, and provide real-world exposure. Students gain confidence in their abilities and aspirations for the future.
Beyond U Programs inspire life-long learning by:
- Appealing to each student’s individual interests.
- Integrating each student’s academic, social and emotional goals.
- Expanding students’ community of learning.
- Deepening their relationships with other students and adults.
- Providing real-world learning in a safe, engaging environment.
Beyond U students are more likely to succeed in school and life.
